Before you go to Maldives: What to Expect | How to get to Maldives | The Best Time to Visit Maldives
One of the earliest images I pinned on my “bucket list travel” board was of a Maldives overwater bungalow, and I’m thrilled that I have been fortunate enough to visit 10 Maldivian gems over the last decade. It’s become one of my favorite spots, so much so that I am committed to returning every year, if my schedule allows. Despite my love for exploring new places, the Maldives remains a unique exception.
If the Maldives is on your dream list (and I bet it is!), don’t just save a photo—start planning your Maldivian getaway! It’s an ideal destination for honeymoons, babymoons, family vacations, special celebrations, snorkelling and diving adventures, or simply to tick off your bucket list.
Traveling to the Maldives.
Getting to the Maldives might seem daunting, especially from the US, but the journey is absolutely worth it. From the East Coast, expect a lengthy trek, but the anticipation of reaching such a special destination makes it worthwhile.
Here’s how you can get there:
Fly into Malé: The main international airport is located in Malé, the capital. Direct flights are available from Europe, Africa, and Asia, but from the US, you’ll likely fly with Singapore Airlines or Emirates, with a stop in Singapore or Dubai. Our route was San Francisco to Dubai to Malé, taking about 30 hours.
Layovers: If you have a long layover in Dubai, consider booking a room at the Dubai International Airport hotel for a comfortable rest. It’s often cheaper to pre-book than to book on arrival. Alternatively, sleep pods are available, though the hotel room may be more cost-effective.
Transfers: Once in Malé, you’ll need to transfer to your resort. With over 1,000 coral islands and numerous resorts, the transfer method depends on your resort’s location:
The best time to visit the Maldives is from November to April during the dry season. This period offers the perfect weather you’ve been dreaming of. However, it’s also the high season, so prices are higher. To save money, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons (late October or early May), avoiding the peak rainy season from May to September.
To truly experience the Maldives, plan for at least 5 -7 days. This allows you to enjoy at least two different resorts and their unique offerings. If you’re short on time, sticking to one resort is perfectly fine for 4-5 days. For a more budget-friendly option, choose resorts within the same atoll to minimize transfer costs.
The Maldives is perfect for everyone—couples, families, friends, and solo travelers. It’s a versatile destination that caters to various types of travelers and occasions.
With more than 170 resorts to choose from in the Maldives, it’s important to consider several factors when selecting the perfect accommodation:
1. Budget: From budget-friendly options to ultra-luxury retreats, there’s something for every price range.
2. Accessibility: Think about the distance from Malé and your preferred transfer method, whether it’s by speedboat or seaplane.
3. Travel Companions: Choose accommodations that cater to your group’s needs, whether you’re traveling as a family, couple, or with friends.
4. Accommodation Type: Options range from beach villas and overwater bungalows to more unique stays, allowing you to select the style that best suits your preferences.
5. Meal Plans: Resorts offer various meal plans, including all-inclusive, half-board (breakfast and dinner), and bed and breakfast, so you can pick the one that fits your dining preferences.
6. Resort Size: Smaller islands provide a more intimate experience, while larger resorts offer a wider range of facilities and activities.
7. Island Size: Consider whether you prefer a small, secluded island or a larger one with more amenities. Most islands are private, providing a sense of exclusivity.
8. Ocean Reef Quality: If snorkeling or diving is a priority, the quality of the house reef can vary by atoll. Some locations are renowned for their vibrant marine life and excellent snorkeling conditions.
9. Special Interests: Whether you’re seeking eco-friendly options, ultra-luxury experiences, or budget-friendly stays, the Maldives offers resorts that cater to specific interests and preferences.
By keeping these factors in mind, you can find the ideal resort that matches your vacation style and needs in this stunning island paradise.
