Rosewood Vienna possesses the rare ability to place guests at the very heart of Vienna’s vibrant city life, surrounded by the finest luxury boutiques and cultural landmarks, while offering a remarkable sense of tranquility the moment they step through its doors. One of the things I love most is the transition. You’re standing on the lively Graben, surrounded by Vienna’s luxury boutiques, and the moment you turn the corner by Hermès towards Petersplatz, everything suddenly feels calmer. It feels personal, sincere, and deeply connected to the city around it.

The Suite Sojourn: Rosewood Vienna is housed in a former 19th-century bank headquarters on Petersplatz. Are there specific architectural or design elements that reference the building’s past, and how did you ensure guests feel its history rather than just admire it?

Roland Hamberger, Managing Director of Rosewood Vienna: The building’s history can be felt in almost every detail, yet never in a way that feels overly traditional or nostalgic. What makes Rosewood Vienna special is that it is a contemporary hotel that still quietly breathes history. As we accompany guests to their rooms, we share the stories that shaped this house, revealing its history, character, and the details that define its unique identity.

Throughout the property, there are thoughtful references to the building’s past and to Vienna itself. In every room, for example, guests will find handwritten postcards displayed as decorative objects, once collected by a former resident of the house. Across the hotel, antique vases, porcelain figures, and carefully sourced design pieces from Vienna’s flea markets create a sense of character and authenticity that feels personal rather than staged.

The heritage of the former bank headquarters is also still present today. The bees from the original Erste Bank emblem remain on the building’s façade, and even within our hand painted Salon Aurélie, a bee appears as a subtle homage. The name Aurélie itself is inspired by the word for gold, referencing honey as “liquid gold”, a quiet nod to the history and identity of the Erste Bank.

Unlike many hotels, our reception is located on the first floor, creating a quieter and more residential sense of welcome, more reminiscent of arriving at a private home or visiting old friends in the heart of Vienna.

His distinctive design language, defined by geometric patterns, clarity of form, and the dialogue between function and artistry, is woven throughout the entire suite, where a Lobmeyr chandelier illuminates the space and Backhausen textiles appear in refined details such as curtains and pillowcases.

This design philosophy continues in every detail: from the fabrics and curtains to carefully selected books, glassware, and subtle decorative elements. Each piece feels intentionally placed, contributing to a cohesive visual and emotional narrative without ever feeling excessive.

What I find particularly compelling is the way historic design is seamlessly connected with contemporary luxury and functionality. This balance creates an atmosphere that feels both culturally grounded and highly relevant today. It is always rewarding to witness guests from all over the world discovering these details and responding to them with genuine appreciation – often in a very personal and emotional way.

Many first-time guests are drawn to the curated artworks throughout the hotel. Interestingly, this often becomes a point of deeper engagement – we’ve even had guests inquire about acquiring certain pieces to take a part of the Rosewood Vienna feeling home with them.

What often stands out most, even if it is not immediately “noticed” in a conventional sense, is the sense of belonging the house creates. Today, a discreet façade inscription marks his former residence, while tradition holds that parts of The Abduction from the Seraglio (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) were composed in this very setting.

The Suite Sojourn: Neue Hoheit Brasserie Restaurant and Bar has become a destination for both locals and travelers. Which dishes or culinary philosophies best define its approach to modern Austrian cuisine, and is there a single dish you feel perfectly tells the story of contemporary Vienna?

Roland Hamberger, Managing Director of Rosewood Vienna: At Neue Hoheit, our approach to modern Austrian cuisine is deeply rooted in tradition, while allowing space for contemporary interpretation and technique. One dish that captures this philosophy particularly well is our Schlutzkrapfen. The filling remains traditionally Austrian with sauerkraut at its core, while the accompanying brown butter is reimagined as a light espuma using molecular techniques, transforming a familiar element into something refined and unexpected without losing its original character.

For us, contemporary Viennese cuisine is about respecting heritage while presenting it through a new lens that remains true to its roots. Nevertheless, no visit would be complete without trying our Wiener Schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn.
