Maldives and Bora Bora are both stunning island destinations, each unique in its own way. I often get asked which one I prefer, but it’s so hard to pick one over the other. For this reason, I will compare the two across several categories and pick a winner in each. There are many factors to consider when deciding which might be ideal for you, so going through each of these factors is helpful before making a decision.
Without further ado, here is my detailed Maldives vs. Bora Bora guide:
To reach Bora Bora, you’ll first fly into Papeete, Tahiti’s main airport. From there, a 45-minute flight on Air Tahiti will take you to Bora Bora. This scenic flight provides stunning views of Mount Otemanu and the surrounding lagoon. Be sure to sit on the left side of the plane for the best views.
Traveling to the Maldives involves flying into Malé International Airport. From Malé, most resorts are accessible via a seaplane or speedboat transfer. To seaplane or not to seaplane? Did you know at The Suite Sojourn, we have a Maldives specific client intake form where we learn more about what your goal of the visit is to ensure we make the right resort recommendations to you. The journey itself is an adventure, offering breathtaking aerial views of the atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean.
Winner: This depends on where you are flying from. If you are in the US, Bora Bora is way easier.

While we loved the villas in Bora Bora, they seemed a bit older compared to those in the Maldives. The waters are usually deeper (12-25 feet), perfect for jumping off the deck but a little more wavy.
The villas in the Maldives are top-notch, luxurious, and often come with amenities like a private butler. The water is usually shallow, calm, and swimmable from the villa.
